| Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
about Broadband Internet Gateway (B.I.G.) |
 |
Q. How many PCs can I connect
to the Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. The Broadband Internet Gateway will allow you to share up to four computers
simultaneously. |
 |
Q. How do I connect
additional PCs to my Cable modem using the Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. Simply plug the cable modem directly into the Broadband Internet Gateway, then
plug the computer intended to share the Internet into the Broadband Internet Gateway's
remaining ports. And you are connected. |
 |
Q. How do I configure the
Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. To make configuration easy SOHOware provides access to the Broadband Internet
Gateway configuration through any Internet browser. Simply enter the Gateway IP address
(192.168.1.1), a blank user name, and "admin" as the password, and you are in. |
 |
Q. What do I need to
configure to get the Broadband Internet Gateway to work with my ISP?
A. In most cases you will not need to configure the Broadband Internet Gateway at
all to start sharing your Internet connection. However, there are a number of advanced
features, which you will probably want to become familiar with so it is a good idea to
review the help menus. |
 |
Q. I have a static IP
address, why can't I connect to my ISP through the Gateway?
A. With a static IP address you will need to manually enter your IP settings in the
Gateway. Simply enter the access setup screen using your browser and enter your IP
information. |
 |
Q. Can I share computer files
and printers using the Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. Yes. One of the benefits of the Broadband Internet Gateway is that it also acts
as a Network hub. By enabling file and printer sharing in Windows you will be able access
the files on one computer from the other computer. |
 |
Q. Will Internet users be
able to see my files if I enable file and printer sharing?
A. No. The Broadband Internet Gateway uses a Network Address Translation technology
that prevents Internet users from accessing computers connected to the Gateway. |
 |
Q. What if I want to allow an
Internet user access to my computer?
A. The Broadband Internet Gateway can be configured to allow one computer to be
seen by Internet users. You simply need to go into the Gateway configuration screen and
enable the "Gaming Zone" feature. |
 |
Q. What kind of parental
control is available?
A. The Broadband Internet Gateway allows parents to provide access to only websites
that are explicitly listed in the Broadband Internet Gateway Parental Control
configuration screen. The Broadband Internet Gateway does not prevent access to *.org,
*.edu, or *.gov websites. |
 |
Q. What Operating Systems
does the Broadband Internet Gateway work with?
A. The Broadband Internet Gateway will work with any operating system using TCP/IP
across a 10BaseT or Ethernet network. Most operating systems like Microsoft Windows use
TCP/IP over Ethernet. Apple computers need to have 10BaseT network interface cards to work
correctly with the Broadband Internet Gateway. |
 |
Q. What type of Firewall
does the Broadband Internet Gateway have?
A. By using NAT (Network Address Translation) it is a inherent firewall, it ensure
security, since each outgoing or incoming request by the user must go through a
translation process that qualify or authenticate the request by matching it to a previous
request. |
 |
Q. What is NAT (Network
Address Translation)?
A. NAT (Network Address Translation) is the translation of an Internet Protocol
address (IP address) used within one network to a different IP address known within
another network. For example one network is designated ad the private network and the
other is the public (Internet). Simply put, NAT automatically masks its private IP
addresses to one public IP addresses and unmask the public IP addresses on incoming
packets back into the original private IP addresses. |
 |
Q. Will my Macintosh work
with the Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. Yes it will as long as you are using a 802.3 standard ethernet adapter. |
 |
Q. The Firmware upgrade
utility does not work with my Macintosh computer(s), why?
A. The Firmware utility can only be run under Windows platform. If you want to
upgrade the Broadband Internet Gateway, you must use a computer with Windows platform.
Hint: borrow a friend's computer. |
 |
Q. Why can't I obtain a
Public IP address in the Broadband Internet Gateway?
A. In most cases this due to your Internet Service Provider having down time. If
this is not the case you can try and reset the cable modem (turning off the power) for
about 5 - 10 seconds. Then try accessing the Status Monitor page to see if you have
received an IP or not. |

 |
Q. How do I upgrade the
firmware for the NBG600?
A.
- Please disconnect all computers from the NBG600 other than the one that will be acting
as an interface during the upgrade procedure. Verify that your TCP/IP configurations are
correct and that the interface computer is directly connected to the NBG600.
- If you already have an upgrade file named "code.BIN" please trash this file so
there will be no confusion when you begin uploading the new firmware file (called
"cd_v1.15_beta.BIN")
- Double-click the icon TFTP Client for NBG600. Then Verify that the IP address, Password,
and FileName fields are correct. NOTE: The IP address and Password of your NBG600 should
be change back to the default setting before upgrading the firmware. MAKE sure the file
"cd_v1.15_beta.bin" is in the file name feild.
- Click UPGRADE to start uploading the new NBG600 firmware. A progress bar should appear
displaying the status of the firmware upload process.
- After the upload process is finished, you must reset the power on the NBG600 to let the
new firmware take effect. To do this, simply disconnect the NBG600s power supply, located
on the back panel of the unit, and reconnect it. If you have any difficulties loading the
new firmware onto your NBG600, please repeat steps 2.2 to 2.5 or refer to
"Trouble-Shooting the Upgrade Process" in this Read Me.
- Trouble Shooting the Upgrade Process (only needed if problems occur) - If you get an
error stating that the file can not be opened, click the "..." side button next
to the file name field. Then locate and select the "cd_v1.15_beta.BIN" file. -
If you get an error stating that the NBG600 is not responding, check your TCP/IP settings.
You might want to reboot your machine in order to release your TCP/IP numbers (this will
refresh the connection between the NBG600 and your computer). You may want to unplug and
replug the power plug for the NGB600 in order to reset the TFTP server to a ready state. -
If the Ready/Test LED is flashing, this is an indication that the firmware upgrade has
failed to load properly. If this happens, run the program over and reboot by unplugging
the unit. This should stop the flashing LED and reset the device.
