Q. Does the NBG800 work with my current DSL service?
A. The NBG800 should work with most DSL Internet Service Providers, however, there are some ISPs that may require some special configuration (i.e.: PPPoE, domain name, etc…).
Q. What is different between static IP and dynamic IP addressing?
A. Static IP address is an IP address that "permanently" assigned to the subscribers when they first sign up for their Internet Service. Dynamically allocated IP address is assigned to you temporarily when you connect to the Internet. The address has a pre-determined time limit.
Q. If I have a domain name, is it possible to get the IP address associated with that name?
A. Most of ISPs do not allow for the hosting of domain names other than the ISP's domain, however contact your ISP for detail.
Q. Why does the NBG800 not obtain the IP address assigned by my ISP?
A. Please try the followings:
  1. Make sure that your cable or DSL modem is connected properly.
  2. Try resetting your cable or DSL modem by powering the modem off and on.
  3. If you are using dynamic IP addressing, make sure that your cable or DSL modem is DHCP-capable.
  4. Some ISPs of Cable service (RoadRunner) require a MAC address to be registered with them.
Q. I am not able to get my emails or my ISP web page (i.e.: http://www.sohoware.com), what can be done?
A. You can contact the ISP to get the full URL or you can do the following:
  1. Connect one of the computers directly to the cable modem.
  2. Open a command prompt and ping the ISP web server or mail server name given. For example, at the command prompt you issue the command: ping www.sohoware.com and then press Enter. You should be able to get an IP address when it replies.
  3. After you get the IP Address, enter the IP address on the mail server option or the Internet browser.
Q. How can I play Internet games (i.e.: Ages of Empire, Quake, Unreal Tournament, etc…) and applications (i.e.: Napster, ICQ, AIM, etc…:) with the NBG800?
A. Enable the DMZ Features, of the web configuration screen. For example, if your computer's IP address is 192.168.10.20, enter the IP address onto DMZ setup page.
Q. What is the maximum number of users supported by the NBG800?
A. The NBG800 supports up to 253 users.
Q. I am not able to get to the web configuration screen for the NBG800, what can I do?
A. You may have to remove proxy settings on your Internet browser (i.e.: Netscape or Internet Explorer). Or, remove the dial-up settings on your browser.
Q. Having trouble getting a DHCP address from your ISP?
A. Many MediaOne/RoadRunner affiliates (USA) use the MAC address of your NIC to enable service (MediaOne/RoadRunner in the New England area does this). If this is your situation, you can do one of the followings:
  1. Use the original PC that was setup for your ISP and use the Clone Feature in the NBG800 to clone the MAC address of the provisioned Ethernet Adapter. Please refer to the manual for more details.
  2. Follow your ISPs procedure to register a new MAC address. You can find the address on the NBG800's bottom titled node ID address. (It looks something like 00-80-C6-C5-00-3F.). Copy this down and give it to your ISP.
Q. I'm having trouble connecting to my DSL Internet Service that is using PPPoE.
A. If you are using DSL, you may very likely to use some sort of PPPoE software. You need to uninstall the PPPoE software completely. The most widely seen PPPoE software is EnterNet 300 or WinPoET, which will cause incompatibility with standalone router device with the PPPoE function.

You need to go through the complete process of removing this software:

  1. Remove the software through "Programs" or "Add/Remove Programs".
  2. Following the on-screen uninstallation procedure, reboot the machine when prompted.
  3. Go to the NBG800 Setup Page and click on "Broadband connection" > "DSL".
  4. Type in the username and password that you normally use in your PPPoE software. (This is your NEW connection screen replacing PPPoE software).

A. Please fill out the RMA (Return Material Authorization) online at: http://www.sohoware.com/serv/repairs.htm#RMA or email a request to ra@sohoware.com.
Q. What is a Static IP address?
A. Just as each building on a street has an address, so does each computer on the Internet. This "address scheme" allow you to distinguish between every computer on the Internet. For example, you may have come across a number in association with Internet lingo such as "198.69.121.3"—or something similar. This is an Internet Protocol (IP) address.
Q. What is a Dynamic IP address?
A. Dynamically allocated IP address is assigned to you temporarily when you connect to the Internet. The address has a pre-determined time limit.
Q. What is DoS?
A. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are aimed at devices and networks with a connection to the Internet. Their goal is not to steal information, but to disable a device or network so users no longer have access to network resources.
There are four popular types of DoS attacks:
  1. Those that exploits bugs in a TCP/IP implementation such as Ping of Death and Teardrop.
  2. Those that exploits weaknesses in the TCP/IP specification such as SYN Flood and LAND Attacks.
  3. Brute-force attacks that flood a network with useless data such as Smurf attack.
  4. IP Spoofing
Q. What is SPI?
A. Stateful Packets Inspection Firewalls restrict access by screening data packets against defined access rules. They make access control decisions based on the IP address and the protocol. They also 'inspect' the session data to assure the integrity of the connection and to adapt to dynamic protocols. The flexible nature of Stateful Packets Inspection firewalls generally provides the best speed and transparency; however, they may lack the granular application level access control or caching that some proxy supports.
Q. What is NAT?
A. NBG800 uses NAT (Network Address Translation) to route all in/out packets. NAT is a technology, which creates a private network domain. This privacy allows Internet access behind a single public IP and since users are connected to the NBG800 instead of connected directly to the Internet. All external users can see is the IP address of the NBG800, however, they cannot see or access any of the computers connected to the NBG800. So the LAN computers are well protected with NBG800's firewall. At the same time, all LAN users can access Internet without any restriction.
Q. What is a Network Firewall?
A. A firewall is a system or group of systems that enforces an access-control policy between two networks. It may also be defined as a mechanism used to protect a trusted network (your private network) from an un-trusted (public Internet) network. The firewall can be thought of two mechanisms of two sides. The first side is used to block the traffic, and the other is to permit traffic.
Q. What is PPPoE
A. PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) is an informational RFC (2516) from the PPP working group of IETF. PPPoE is a much simpler way of supporting PPP over DSL accesses for Ethernet attached DSL modems. It takes advantage of Ethernet's shared environment along with PPP's familiar and secure dial-access user model.

Other benefits to PPPoE include:

  • Taking advantage of Ethernet's shared environments
  • Allows for a single PC to set up PPP sessions to different destination networks at one time
  • Enables a shared LAN and multiple PC's to simultaneously establish PPP sessions to different destination networks
