| Troubleshooting PCI Card Installations in
Win95 and Win98 |
|
|
 |
|
| Preface: |
|
|
 |
|
- PCI cards use the shorter of the expansion bus connectors. Fully compliant PCI cards are
PnP and should auto-install. Prior to attempting any of the following steps, confirm that
the customer has the most current software and using the correct procedure. Also confirm
that the computer has free resources. (Lack of IRQ's most common)
- Check the revision level of Win95, on the general tab of the system page of control
panel.
- If it is 4.00.950 = Win95 (original): Advise customer of Service Pack 1, which includes
numerous updates & fixes for networking. Some OEM install do not have a sharing page
for hard drive, it fixes that problem. It is available free from Microsoft's web page.
- If it is 4.00.950a = Win95sr1 (also call Win95a): This is the most common version. There
are different procedures for sr1 & OSR2.
- If it is 4.00.950b = Win95 OSR2 (also called Win95B): This version has the ability to
share IRQ's. IRQ sharing is disabled by default. To enable, go to control panel, device
manager tab, expand the system devices, double click PCI Bus, IRQ Sharing tab, make sure
box is checked to enable IRQ sharing.
- When using device manager to reinstall card remove all references to card or to PCI
Ethernet Controller in both the Network and Other Devices categories, then reboot,
allowing Win95 detect and install the software.

| Procedure: |
|
|
 |
|
- Run the card diagnostics; ncdiag for ND4300,conf\ndcdiag for NE100TXe. Ensure that that
card is set for PnP, no boot rom and half-duplex. Run all the tests, with the cable hooked
to the network. Be sure to run from the DOS prompt, not the Windows box.
- If card passes the on-board diagnostics but won't install, try removing the driver and
put into a different PCI slot.
- If it still won't install, check the device manager for a resource conflict. The I/O
range can be modified in device manager and will be written to the card. The IRQ can not
be modified in device manager. It must be resolved in the BIOS setup. Make notes of
conflicting devices, IRQ's and bus type of each.
- To enter BIOS setup, press required key after the POST. Usually it is the Del, F1, or
Ctl+Alt+Del. Usually says what to do on the screen to enter. Find the PCI setup page or
section, check that PnP is enabled and IRQ selection on "Level". If the
conflicting device is an ISA device, sound or video card remove the IRQ used by that
device from the list of assigned IRQ's to the PCI Bus. Add a free IRQ to the list to
replace it. The PCI Bus must have 4 IRQ's assigned to it. (Unless otherwise stated. Some
BIOS setups require PnP to be disabled to see or change the list. Be sure to change back
before exiting.)
- If still not installing, consult with Tech Support.
