Configuring TCP/IP

Following is a diagram of recommended TCP/IP settings. If this is your first time setting up local area network (LAN), please use these settings.

In our example above, the SERVER computer has 2 Network Interface Cards (NICs). One network card is used for Cable or DSL modem access. The second card is used for LAN access.

Here are the TCP/IP settings we recommend for the SERVER computer...

For Cable or DSL Modem Users:

1st NIC on SERVER computer for Internet access:

IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
Subnet Mask: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
WINS Configuration: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
Gateway: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
DNS Configuration: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
Host Name: Set to any name or according to ISP, but different from others
Domain Name: Blank

2nd NIC on SERVER computer for LAN access:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
WINS Configuration: Disable WINS Resolution
Gateway: Blank
DNS Configuration: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
Host Name: Set to any name or according to ISP, but different from others
Domain Name: Blank

For Dial-Up Connection Users:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
WINS Configuration: Disable WINS Resolution
Gateway: Blank
DNS Configuration: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (ISP automatically/manually assigned)
Host Name: Set to any name or according to ISP, but different from others
Domain Name: Blank

Here are the TCP/IP settings we recommend for the CLIENT computer(s)...

IP Address: 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4,...
for each individual client machines respectively).
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
WINS Configuration: Disable WINS Resolution
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (same as SERVER computer's IP address)
DNS Configuration: 192.168.0.1 (same as SERVER computer's IP address)
Host Name: Set to any name, but different from others
Domain Name: Blank

To set these values on your computer, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->Network (You should see a box similar to the one shown below)

  • Double-click on TCP/IP for the network interface card for your local network (i.e.: "TCP/IP -> NDC 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter Adapter (MX-A)(MX98713)").

  • If you are using a cable modem or DSL connection, do not edit the properties for the network interface card used for the Internet connection.
  • From the TCP/IP Properties screen on every computer, go through each tab (IP Address, WINS Configuration, Gateway, DNS Configuration) and verify that the values under each of these tabs match with the recommended values above.
  • Select the "OK " button to close this dialog box, then select "OK " again from the Network Control Panel to close and save your settings.
  • Make sure that the Subnet Mask and Workgroup for each computer is the same and that the IP address for each computer is in the same range but each address is unique.
  • Your computer should then prompt you to restart for these settings to take effect. "Your computer must be restarted for the changes to work ".
